The American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification combines online modules with in-person practical skills sessions. This approach offers flexibility and convenience while ensuring candidates develop the necessary knowledge and skills for lifeguarding.

The Blended Learning approach offers flexibility and convenience while ensuring candidates develop the necessary knowledge and skills for lifeguarding. Bloodborne pathogens training is included as part of the Lifeguarding course.

Requirements:

  • All lifeguard participants must complete a 6.5-hour eLearning module before the first in-person session.
  • The in-person training consists of about 22.5 hours of classroom instruction and hands-on practice in the water.
  • Completion of the full eLearning module is required before attending any in-person sessions.
  • Participants must also complete required swimming skills prerequisites before taking the final skills assessment.
  • The course concludes with a final written exam of 50 multiple-choice questions. A minimum score of 80% is needed to pass.

Minimum Age: 15 years

Complete the online module and present the confirmation of completion before starting the in-person skills session.

Blended Learning Lifeguarding Course Online Module

Lifeguarding Course Prerequisites

Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence:

  • Swim 150 yards using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both (no swimming on back or side; goggles allowed).
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs.
  • Swim an additional 50 yards using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination (goggles allowed).

Timed Event (must be completed within 1 minute, 40 seconds):

  • Start in the water and swim 20 yards (face may be in or out of the water; goggles not allowed).
  • Surface dive (head-first or feet-first) to a depth of 7–10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
  • Surface and swim 20 yards on the back, returning to the starting point while holding the object with both hands, keeping your face at or near the surface.
  • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Shallow Water Lifeguarding Course Prerequisites

The Shallow Water Lifeguarding course covers all regular material except deep water rescues and certifies you to guard pools up to 5 feet deep. Register for the regular course and inform your instructor at check-in if you want Shallow Water Lifeguarding. Bloodborne pathogens training is included as part of the Lifeguarding course.

The Lifeguarding Recertification course is for lifeguards with a valid or recently expired (within 30 days) American Red Cross Lifeguarding or Shallow Water Lifeguarding certificate. The in-person session is about 10 hours and 15 minutes, and a 6.5-hour eLearning module must be completed beforehand. Bloodborne pathogens training is included as part of the Lifeguarding course.

Complete the online module and present the confirmation of completion before starting the in-person skills session.

Blended Learning Lifeguarding Course Online Module

High Sierra Pools offers free online Bloodborne Pathogens Training to current and future employees.

  • Lifeguarding course participants automatically receive this training and certificate.
  • Returning lifeguards must renew the Bloodborne Pathogens certificate every year.
  • The online training link is sent with a job offer or can be requested by emailing [email protected].
  • Completing the online training provides a 1-year Bloodborne Pathogens Training certification.
  • The online training is designed to be completed in one hour.
  • The CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers program trains professional-level rescuers to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children, and
    infants until more advanced medical personnel take over.
    Requirements:
    All participants must complete a 2-3-hour eLearning module before the in-person session.
    The in-person training consists of about 5 hours of clasyessroom instruction and hands-on practice.
    Completion of the full eLearning module is required before attending the in-person session.
    The course concludes with a final written exam of 25 multiple-choice questions. A minimum score of 80% is needed to pass.

Minimum Age: 15 years.

Blended Learning Lifeguarding Course Online Module

Our training course provides you with the essential knowledge and skills needed for safe and effective pool operations. You will learn about water chemistry and balance, routine maintenance, troubleshooting common pool issues, preventing technical problems, and enhancing overall pool safety.

Requirements and Fees:

  • Participants must be at least 16 years old.
  • The course is free for HSP employees whose positions (such as Pool Manager) require Pool Operator certification.
  • All other HSP employees are welcome to enroll for a reduced fee of $50.
  • Non-employees may also register for the Pool Operator course; the fee is $150.

Certification: Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a High Sierra Pools Pool Operator certification, valid for three years.

High Sierra Pools (HSP) organizes Online Pool Operator courses year-round and at poolside locations for HSP employees starting
in June.

High Sierra Pools has a discounted price program for employees. The lifeguard training and certification is provided at a discounted price for participants who obtain the certification and then work as a lifeguard for High Sierra Pools for at least 150 hours during the 2025 season before September 1, 2025. Lifeguards who fail to meet the conditions for the discounted price for the training and certification course will be liable to pay the difference between the discounted price paid and the full cost of the lifeguarding certification class. If lifeguards sign up for a discounted training, they must complete the scheduled class dates; otherwise, they will have to pay any price difference in cost if they switch to a different class.

The full cost for the lifeguarding class for non-employees of High Sierra Pools is $325.00. The full cost for the lifeguarding review class for non-employees of High Sierra Pools is $150.00.

Do I need an LFG certificate to schedule an interview with High Sierra Pools? 

No, you can schedule your interview before obtaining your American Red Cross Lifeguard certificate. However, we strongly encourage you to get certified at your earliest convenience.

What is the minimum required age to participate in a Lifeguarding course? 

Participants must be at least 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of the course.

What are the prerequisites for the course? 

Please see the specific prerequisites for the Lifeguarding and Shallow Water Lifeguarding class by following the link provided on our main page. 

 

What course should I register for?

  • New Lifeguard: If you have never been certified, or your certification expired more than 30 days ago, you must register for the Blended Learning Lifeguarding/Shallow Water Lifeguarding course.
  • Current Lifeguard: If you have a current valid American Red Cross certificate (or one that expired no more than 30 days ago), register for the Lifeguarding Recertification course.

Should I register for the Shallow Water Lifeguarding or Lifeguarding course? 

Please register for the regular Lifeguarding course. You can inform your instructor during check-in if you would like to be tested as a Shallow Water Lifeguard. The Shallow Water course covers all the material of the regular course, minus deep water rescues, and certifies you to guard pools up to 5 feet deep.

How long is the course? 

The Blended Learning Lifeguarding course takes approximately 29 hours total:

  • Online Portion: 6 hours and 30 minutes
  • In-Person Sessions: 22 hours and 30 minutes

Is there a lunch break? 

Yes. Students should bring their own food or purchase food from nearby locations.

What if I must reschedule the course? 

You may reschedule your class up to 24 hours before the start time by contacting our office at [email protected].

What if I fail to complete the online training before the in-person session? 

You must show proof of completion for the online content prior to the first in-person session. If you do not complete the online training, you will not be accepted into the course.

What if I fail to complete the course prerequisites? 

If you are not successful on the first attempt, you will have one more opportunity to meet the prerequisites after resting. If you fail a second time, you cannot participate in the class but may request a refund.

What should I bring to the course? 

You will need a swimsuit, towels, picture ID, a printed or downloaded handbook, a pen, and paper. Water, sun lotion, and snacks are also recommended.

How long is the final written exam? 

The written exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions. Participants must achieve a score of at least 80 percent to be eligible for certification.

What if I fail the final written exam? 

If you do not pass on the first attempt, you may retake the written exam using the alternate version provided by the instructor.

When and how will I receive my certificates? 

Your instructor will submit course records within 72 hours of completion. You will then receive an email with a link to access your digital certification.
